Ericsson pioneers Cloud RAN call with newest HPE ProLiant Compute Gen12 Server and Intel Xeon 6 SoC
Ericsson has successfully completed a Cloud RAN 5G call using the HPE ProLiant Compute DL110 Gen12 server, powered by Intel Xeon 6 or system-on-chip (SoC). The achievement marks another step in the evolution and industrialization of Open RAN, enabling communications service providers (CSPs) to deploy high-performing, scalable, and efficient networks built on open, cloud-native infrastructure powered by Red Hat technologies.
This ecosystem collaboration brings together Ericsson’s Cloud RAN software running on Red Hat OpenShift, HPE servers purposely designed for telecom operator deployments, and Intel’s new Xeon 6 SoC, delivering enhanced performance, scalability, AI-driven efficiency, and deployment flexibility.
The successful achievement highlights the technical readiness of Ericsson’s Cloud RAN to run seamlessly on the latest cloud-native platforms while maintaining software portability across processor generations. This capability enables CSPs to maximize return on their technology investments, simplify deployment, and extend hardware lifecycles — ensuring operational and cost efficiency.
This collaboration shows Ericsson’s strong position in the Cloud RAN ecosystem by leveraging Red Hat OpenShift support for Intel Xeon 6. By integrating Red Hat OpenShift, the industry’s leading hybrid cloud application platform powered by Kubernetes, Ericsson is pioneering the transition to cloud-native architecture. This enables CSPs to achieve greater operational agility and accelerate their network modernization.
This milestone also reflects how Ericsson’s Cloud RAN strategy enables future-proof infrastructure through an open and collaborative ecosystem. It reaffirms Ericsson’s commitment to openness while supporting a multivendor approach, offering a broad range of options for customers to deploy 5G at a scale.
Johan Hultell, Head of Product Line Cloud and Purpose Built 5G RAN, Business Area Networks, Ericsson, says: “This achievement demonstrates our continued progress in industrializing Cloud RAN and delivering on the promise of open and high-performing networks. Together with HPE and Intel, we’re empowering CSPs to accelerate their Cloud RAN deployments with confidence and flexibility.”
Cristina Rodriguez, Vice President and General Manager, Communications Solutions Group, Intel, says: "Intel's Xeon 6 SoC is central to the Cloud RAN solution, offering outstanding performance-per-watt and integrated vRAN and AI acceleration for intelligent network management. This first call with Ericsson and HPE reflects our close collaboration and shared commitment to meeting operators’ requirements for high-performance, AI-enabled Open RAN.”
Fernando castro Cristin, Vice President and General Manager, Telco Infrastructure Business at HPE says: “The HPE ProLiant Compute DL110 Gen12 server is 6G-ready and designed to meet the demands of Cloud RAN applications. Our collaboration with Ericsson and Intel delivers a scalable, cost-efficient and flexible solution to telco operators which helps them modernize their networks.”
