Zayo taps Ciena to enhance its German wavelength service market reach
Zayo Europe has deployed Ciena’s optical technology to launch a new German network, covering 3,000 km of fiber across eight core domestic metros, including Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, and Berlin. The network also extends to a 14th key hub across the border in Strasbourg, France. Leveraging Ciena’s Reconfigurable Line System (RLS) and WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) solutions, Zayo Europe can now offer 400G wave services across key German markets, with the option to scale to 800G and 1.6Tb/s in the future as required.
Ciena claims that its WL6e coherent transceiver can drive significant economic benefits for operators, including a 50% reduction in space and power per bit.
Zayo Europe will be able to offer new wavelength services across its entire European footprint, including key long-haul routes across Germany.
Colman Deegan, CEO of Zayo Europe, stated that the company has partnered with Ciena for its optical network, enabling it to support its customers in keeping pace with emerging AI adoption and cloud usage patterns.
"Germany is a key strategic market for Zayo Europe, and with the EU pushing to advance AI capabilities across the continent, there’s a pressing need for networks within Germany that can support these new workloads,” he said.
Providing wavelength services is a key priority for Zayo Europe.
In March 2024, the provider launched its Waves on Demand service, providing access to bandwidth across its 400G fully enabled lit-fiber network in Europe. This feature allows customers to activate services across Europe within just five working days, significantly reducing the service delivery interval from the industry standard of 30 days or more.
The on-demand model has been deployed on key connectivity corridors between Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Paris, Marseille, Bordeaux, and Dusseldorf. Coupled with Zayo’s metro network, this capability can be extended to key access locations across Western Europe.
