Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (LMT) partners with Ericsson to modernize subscriber infrastructure

Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (LMT), Latvia's largest communication service provider, has chosen Ericsson to power its next phase of transformation geared towards delivering 5G across Latvia. The new agreement brings Ericsson in to modernize LMT’s subscriber domain infrastructure. Over the next year, Ericsson will upgrade LMT’s cloud infrastructure and replace its legacy communication services and user data management systems with a modern solution built on service-based architecture, making the network ready for a smoother future deployment of 5G standalone.

This strategic move will upgrade LMT’s cloud infrastructure to Ericsson’s NFVI (Network Functions Virtualization Infrastructure) solution, giving it the ability to deploy both virtualized and cloud-native network functions, and opening-up a wide range of transformation avenues. The new agreement also upgrades LMT’s IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and consolidates LMT’s subscriber data systems within its core network into a future-ready architecture, establishing a solid foundation for scalable, high-quality service innovation.

While the transition does not introduce new end-user features immediately, it enhances network reliability and prepares the operator for next-generation services by modernizing critical backend infrastructure.

The deal builds on the two companies’ longstanding relationship. It marks the first deployment of Ericsson’s Unified Data Management (UDM) offering in Telia Group, reinforcing Ericsson’s position as a trusted core network partner in Northern Europe. It also deepens an ongoing collaboration with LMT, as well as participation in mission critical communications projects.

Aigars Benders, Technical Director, LMT says: “By transitioning to cloud infrastructure, and upgrading these essential core network functions, we gain improved operational flexibility and the ability to implement future updates with minimum disruption. Ericsson’s modular, cloud-native architecture is designed for seamless scalability, and provides the essential bedrock for us to build LMT’s broader digitalization program on and introduce valuable 5G services to our subscribers.”

Niclas Backlund, Head of Ericsson’s Global Customer Unit Telia, says: “This upgrade is not just about replacing legacy systems. It’s about empowering LMT with a 5G standalone ready cloud infrastructure and subscriber data management solution, giving it an agile and robust platform that can evolve with its customers’ needs and support new digital services as demand grows.”

The deal means the replacement of LMT’s legacy Home Location Register (HLR) and Home Subscriber Server (HSS) with Ericsson’s Unified Data Management (UDM) solution, along with the introduction of Ericsson’s Network Functions Virtualization Infrastructure (NFVI). The scope also includes the migration of LMT’s PNF (Physical Network Function) IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) to Ericsson’s Cloud IMS platform.
