Elisa, Ericsson and MediaTek set record 8 Gbps download speed in 5G Standalone network
The Finnish communications service provider Elisa has together with Ericsson and MediaTek set a new benchmark in the European telecom industry by achieving download speeds of up to 8 Gbps in a live 5G Standalone (5G SA) network in Jorvas, Kirkkonummi, Finland. This is the highest download speed recorded in Europe to date. The record speed was enabled by aggregation of an impressive total of 12 component carriers.
Elisa, Finland's premier communications service provider, is leading the way in offering premium mobile broadband and subscription services on a 5G Standalone network. This carrier component aggregation test, featuring record-breaking speeds, is a crucial step in making these advanced services widely available across the country and across customer segments.
The aim is to enhance the user experience by providing faster downloads, seamless video streaming for smartphone users, lightning-fast mobile internet for homes and offices, as well as new industrial use cases utilizing network slicing, a technology that reserves parts of the network to provide tailored services for different applications and users.
Sami Komulainen, Chief Operating Officer at Elisa, says: "It is vital for Europe to be at the forefront of 5G development in order to support innovation related to AI, among other things. This important milestone with Ericsson and MediaTek helps us to add to the capacity and coverage of our 5G services in the future.”
Per Narvinger, executive Vice President and Head of Business Area Networks at Ericsson, says: "Ericsson’s carrier aggregation solution enables our partners to build high-performing 5G networks. This achievement with Elisa is more than a technology milestone – it delivers on the promise of 5G. Together with Elisa, we are turning 5G capabilities into a reality that directly benefits people and businesses."
Dr. HC Hwang, General Manager of Wireless Communication Systems and Partnerships at MediaTek, says: “This milestone achievement, utilizing the latest groundbreaking advanced 5G connectivity, highlights the strength of our collaboration with Ericsson and Elisa. This is an awe-inspiring leap ahead in live video streaming, immersive AR/VR applications, and more, enabling consumers to enjoy seamless content, interaction and engagement with incredible responsiveness.”
The test used aggregation of six component carriers for downlink carrier aggregation, and New Radio-Dual Connectivity (NR-DC) with a total of 12 component carriers.
Frequency bands were leveraged from the 4G network (LTE) to further increase capacity for Elisa’s 5G SA network. A MediaTek M90 5G modem-based device, equipped to support the carrier aggregation, played a critical role in validating the achievement.
