Vodafone Spain to deploy standalone 5G Core network for consumers with Ericsson
Vodafone Spain has selected Ericsson as the main technology partner for the provision of their 5G Core standalone network for residential customers. The agreement will enable Vodafone Spain to establish a fully independent mobile 5G network, leveraging Ericsson's latest technology and advanced services to offer differentiated services to their customers. The selected solution is based on Ericsson's dual-mode 5G Core technology, leveraging the infrastructure and coverage already deployed with 5G technology and which Vodafone continues to deploy to reach 90% of the population and over 3,700 municipalities by the end of this year.
The agreement spans four years and will enable the improvement of Vodafone's network operational processes and customer experience.
Ericsson will implement advanced network functions
The 5G standalone core is the pivotal element of the 5G network, housing the network intelligence through which new functionalities such as network slicing, quality of service (QoS), and latency improvements down to under 10 milliseconds, within ideal conditions, will be provided. Additionally, advanced edge computing will be enabled, fostering the development of real-time services.
In this way, a more sustainable, efficient, stable, flexible, and scalable network will be enabled, allowing Vodafone customers to benefit from improved battery efficiency in 5G smartphones, as well as better coverage and higher speeds in network access.
5G Standalone networks are built on a new service-oriented architecture that enables new business models centered on standardized API exposure and leveraging the network as a platform. The 5G core standalone network enables the development of 5G applications and use cases that improve people's quality of life.
