MIIT Announces Pilot Programs for 10Gbps Optical Networks in China
Beijing, January 7 – China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has issued a notification regarding the launch of pilot programs for 10-gigabit optical networks. The initiative sets out to conduct pilots by the end of 2025 in cities and regions with suitable conditions and established foundations, focusing on key scenarios such as residential communities, factories, and industrial parks.
A 10-gigabit optical network represents the future evolution of optical networking technology and is an integral part of new information infrastructure. As new services and applications continue to emerge, there is an increasing demand for optical networks that offer higher bandwidth, lower latency, and enhanced reliability. This necessitates accelerating the transition from gigabit to 10-gigabit optical networks.
The notification specifies that the pilot programs will target critical scenarios like residential areas, manufacturing facilities, and business parks. These pilots aim to deploy and apply advanced technologies including ultra-wideband optical access via 50G-PON (Passive Optical Network), synergy between FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) / FTTR (Fiber-to-the-Room) and 7th generation wireless local area networks, high-speed large-capacity optical transmission, and the integration of optical networks with artificial intelligence.
An official from the MIIT's Department of Information and Communication Development noted that these pilot programs will serve as a catalyst, coordinating efforts across various industry stakeholders. The goal is to foster the development of a mature 10-gigabit optical network industry chain and a comprehensive industrial ecosystem. The pilots will orderly guide the progression of 10-gigabit optical networks from technological trials toward full-scale deployment and application.
Note: In English, "万兆光网" is translated as "10-gigabit optical network," which is more commonly referred to as "10Gbps optical network." Technical terms such as "50G-PON", "FTTH", and "FTTR" are kept in their original form as they are internationally recognized acronyms within the telecommunications industry.
