AWS marks launch of new cloud region in Thailand with $5B investment

　　Amazon Web Services (AWS) today announced the launch of its new cloud region in Thailand, committing more than $5 billion as part of its long-term investment in the Southeast Asian country over the next 15 years.

　　The new cloud region is the first AWS infrastructure region in Thailand and the fourteenth region in Asia-Pacific. It joins existing AWS regions in Hong Kong, Hyderabad, Jakarta, Malaysia, Melbourne, Mumbai, Osaka, Seoul, Singapore, Sydney and Tokyo, as well as the Beijing and Ningxia regions in China.

　　The AWS Asia-Pacific (Thailand) region has three Availability Zones (AZs), each a fully isolated partition of the AWS infrastructure supported by several data centers. Each AZ has its own independent power, cooling and physical security, and is connected via high-speed fiber to national backbone networks.

　　AWS said its latest investment in Thailand will support an average of more than 11,000 jobs annually in the local data center supply chain and contribute approximately $10 billion to Thailand's GDP.

　　"The establishment of the AWS Region in Thailand will deepen our collaboration with Thai customers and partners to advance their digital transformation and accelerate generative AI adoption. Having AWS data centers located in Thailand will drive innovation, enhance productivity, advance our economy, and encourage more investment in the country," Vatsun Thirapatarapong, AWS Thailand country manager, said in a statement.

　　According to Thailand's Digital Government Agency, which is working with AWS to improve the country's e-government initiatives, the establishment of the new AWS region in Thailand is a "significant milestone" in the nation's digital transformation journey.

　　"As we accelerate our Cloud First policy, this new infrastructure will provide our government agencies with the necessary resources to innovate and deliver essential services to our citizens," Dr. Asis Unyapoth, executive vice president of the DGA, said in a statement.

　　He added: "We are confident that AWS's commitment to cloud security standards will ensure the protection of our sensitive data, enabling us to leverage the power of the cloud with peace of mind."

　　With the launch of the AWS Asia-Pacific (Thailand) Region, AWS now has 111 Availability Zones across 35 geographic regions, with announced plans to launch 15 more Availability Zones and five more AWS Regions in Mexico, New Zealand, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Taiwan and the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
